Reframing: how would it feel to stop self-limiting?
One thing which many of us can struggle with is the idea of even being able to change our mindset, to enable us to bring about the positive change that we yearn for in different areas of our lives. Reframing is a powerful, yet simple, tool which can support that change.
Reframing is such a useful technique for convincing our subconscious to accept change, and this is something we can practice in our daily lives.
Firstly, we practice listening out for the negatives we reinforce through our inner dialogue. Identify key phrases and beliefs that we consistently tell ourselves and which keep us fixed in an unhelpful approach – whether to life generally, to a specific situation, or to our beliefs about ourselves.
Then we begin to shift those self-limiting narratives. When we tell ourselves, or others, for instance, that a goal is too hard, then we are reinforcing subconsciously that we don’t have the ability to achieve the desired outcome. We are hardwiring our minds for falling short of the objective before we start.

When I work with clients with a fixed mindset, I often find that at the outset they struggle to reframe their unhelpful beliefs – so someone might say “it’s too hard” but not find it easy to couch that acknowledgement of their struggle in a less final way. I encourage them to swap that phrase out for something along the lines of “It is hard, but I’m practising and it will get easier”. After a little practice, the client starts to find ways, in their own words, of reframing their own unhelpful thoughts, and the mind is starting to shift.
One of the most powerful moments that happens is when the client realises, really realises, that they have changed something that they had thought impossible to alter. That moment shifts the client’s mindset completely, as they understand that the limits they had been confined within can be altered and moved, allowing for expansion in every level of their life.
